Perfect disquise part I

“Isn’t it just a little fascinating that we never get caught together?” Ueda asks, his mouth full of takoyaki.

Ryo, legs shamelessly swinging underneath his own stool—it’s just Ueda watching and he saves the short jokes for when he’s really desperate nowadays—shrugs. “Only you would call that fascinating.”

“But really,” Ueda insists, gesturing the owner of the stall for more food and sake.

“Well,” Ryo muses, watching in amusement how much Tatsuya can eat while he’s been done for a while. The guy really loves him some octopus. This coming from Osaka’s finest. “You’ve always been good to at it. And I’ve learned a thing or two from the master.”

“Oh, a compliment,” Ueda grins. At least his mouth is empty this time.

“Must you point, like, every single one of them out? It’s not like they’re scarce or anything.”

“They’re still nice,” Ueda sighs.

“Are you drunk?” Ryo eyes Ueda a little suspiciously.

“Definitely not,” Ueda shakes his head. It still feels weird that no hair flies into his face as he does so. Ryo must think the same because he looks at Ueda with a little frown on his face. “I’m just . . . pensive.”

“Right, great. I love when you call yourself that,” Ryo grimaces. Ueda fakes one right back on purpose, and they laugh.

“The thing is, it’s been going on for so long. I don’t mean just media. Not even Kame knows. And I feel like the guy knows everything,” Ueda says.

“That’s because you tell him. And what do you know? Maybe he knows, but he’s not telling,” Ryo laughs at the idea of Kame secretly watching them and keeping the information of Ueda Tatsuya and Nishikido Ryo being friends for almost a decade now as possible ransom material.

“Now, that would be a mind-game bigger than ours,” Ueda laughs.

“Tatsuya,” Ryo interrupts, grabbing Ueda’s shoulder. “What is with you? What are you getting at?”

Ueda looks right into Ryo’s eyes. It’s dark outside and still too cold to be eating at a food stall, and Ryo can’t see anything anyway.

“Never mind. I’m just playing with you,” Ueda says at the end.

Ryo turns back forwards. Neither of them says anything as they drink their beer. It’s not uncomfortable. It hasn’t been uncomfortable for years. When Ryo bumps his shoulder with Ueda’s, Ueda pushes back, but just a little, so that Ryo sways on his stool but doesn’t fall off. They grin at each other, finish another plate of food and walk a part of the way home together until Ueda needs to take a turn left and Ryo needs to go straight ahead to catch a train home.

“It’s fun, being friends with you and not having to report about it to anyone,” Ryo says before they part. “I thought we were on the same page about it.”

“We were, still are,” Ueda nods. “I was just being silly. Why would I want to brag about you anyway?” Ueda asks.

Ryo laughs, head falling back. When he straightens up, he rubs Ueda’s head, hair fuzzy between his fingers.

“And here I thought you just like to keep me to yourself,” he says and winks. “I know I do. I like the privacy of it.” He waves Ueda good bye and leaves, almost skipping from the good mood he’s in. Excellent food and company is really relaxing.

So Ryo likes to keep Tatsuya to himself.

Ueda stands on the intersection until he can’t see Ryo anymore, then turns towards his home. He sighs a little, shakes his head even, then straightens his shoulders and picks up his pace. It’s too late, and he has shooting early in the morning tomorrow. Normally he’d have been in bed for at least an hour by now.
